I have always felt the performance of my horses starts at home with good stable management and good quality feed. I believe that soaking hay lowers the dust factor in the stable. When travelling and competing it is very important to me that my horses are well hydrated and stay that way. We monitor their water intake pre-shipping and during competition especially in the hotter weather. Even when we know our horses are drinking well, it is comforting to know we are adding even more water to their feed through hay soaking.
Soaking hay has been a routine in our barn for many years because we believe it is beneficial to our horses’ health. The haydrator is a very durable, extremely labour saving and thorough machine. It really makes feeding 28 horses wet hay as easy as feeding it dry.

We began soaking all of our hay about 12 years ago because we had some excellent quality hay but it was a little dusty. Once we were through that batch of hay it just made sense to continue soaking hay for all our horses. There are always one or two horses requiring wet hay because of allergies, but it made sense to continue feeding wet good quality hay to all of our stabled horses as a preventative measure. Also, soaking hay adds a significant amount of water to the horses’ dry forage and we felt getting extra moisture into their digestive system also made sense. We have been soaking all our hay, both at home and on the road while competing, ever since.
When we started soaking our hay by hand, it took about one hour every morning to prepare enough wet hay for 28 horses over 4 feedings. It also took a good 20 minutes for clean up after it. With winter and the cold weather coming, various designs of a means for soaking hay ensued. Many variations, a lot of research, and many trials later we are fortunate to have the haydrator to soak our hay. The machine is easy to use and has been 100 percent reliable for the past six years.
